Posted on October 27th, 2011 in ESXi, Tips, vCenter, Virtualization | No Comments »

Just read through 1 of the KB here which referring to the potential risk to create a purple screen scenerio during the vSphere 5 upgrade while you ESX host update 2 could potential conflict with the vCenter 5.

You may encounter an issue where:

  • You have recently upgraded your vCenter Server to version 5.0
  • You have hosts of minimum version ESXi 4.0 Update 2 (build 261974) and maximum version ESXi 4.0 Patch 9 (build 360236) in your vCenter Server inventory
  • After the vpxa agents are upgraded, the ESXi 4.0 Update 2 hosts experience a purple screen that includes this error:NOT_IMPLEMENTED bora/vmkernel/filesystems/visorfs/visorfsObj.c:3391
Solution
This issue has been resolved in ESXi 4.0 Update 3. To avoid this issue, upgrade all affected hosts to at least ESXi 4.0 Update 3 (build 398348) before upgrading vCenter Server to 5.0.

NFS advantage over SAN in cloud computing

Posted on September 2nd, 2011 in ESXi, Hardware, Industry News | 1 Comment »

Went through a session of sharing this morning from the federal goverment about the development and testing as a servic cloud computing in real deployment for experience sharing. The session was interesting with details architecture sharing how it was deployed by the presenter.

One of the key area they highlighted was the stoage protocol they choosed, which is NFS rather than iscsi and FC SAN, which was mainly due to the flexibility of volume shrink or resize that could support on the fly. I am agreed with their statement as personal thought, for large scale deployment, NFS are much easier to manage compare to Iscsi and FC environment.

How to make APC PCNS 2.2.4 work with ESXi 4.1

Posted on October 7th, 2010 in ESXi, Tips | 2 Comments »

For the past 1 week, I have been busy with the APC PCNS and ESXi 4.1 and I would like to share my experience “How to make APC PCNS 2.2.4 work with ESXi 4.1″ here.

Basically I will not discuss How To Install PowerChute Network Shutdown on VMware ESX /ESXi again and you may refer to APC official link here.

If you’re try to install APC PCNS 2.2.4 on vSphere Management Assistant (vMA) 4.1 and I’m sure you will get the similar error like “This version of PowerChute Network Shutdown only support VMware ESXi” which I think APC teams should it much more clear. The error message caused by APC PCNS (ver 2.2.4) setup file – “install.sh” which check on “/etc/vima-release” file. In the vMA 4.1 released, you’re can only found “/etc/vma-release” file which changed recently. Create a symbolic link or edit the installation script can temporary ignore these error message. See this link.
