VMware Site Recovery Manager Compatible List

Posted on April 5th, 2011 in Tips, Virtualization | No Comments »

Recently there is an interesting question been raised by my customer, Do VMware Site recovery manager supported on VMware Essential plus edition? Obviously as they do not have many servers in place, they would like to seek for alternative solution to drive the cost down, therefore the question had been raised.

The Local VMware Representative had sent me the official link which has the complete compatible list for VMware SRM. It had clearly stated Essential Plus is not supported in this case. If you are doing VMware Design that require SRM in place, I will advice you to read through this complete documentation, it is very useful.

You can download the PDF file from here.

Bugs on ESX Host and vCenter for ESX 4.0 Update 2

Posted on March 29th, 2011 in Tips | No Comments »

Yesterday I re-setup the VMware environment for my client. There was a weird problem we were facing on the port group from standard vswitch for VMkernel. Here is the step how I create it.

Firstly, I created a new vSwitch, which is vSwitch 1 is this case, and I created 2 extra port group which is NFS1 and NFS2 at the same time with correct ip, subnet and etc. Once I done that, I click ok to apply the configuration. Funny thing happen now, the NFS1 created was working as I can mount the datastore as I need. NFS2 was giving problem which it suppose to point to different storage unit for NFS, it could not reach the storage unit. I try to perform vmkping on the ESX host, and it could not reach the storage host.

Xencenter doesn’t work on Windows 7

Posted on March 20th, 2011 in Tips | 10 Comments »

If you are trying to install the Xencenter on Windows 7, you may face an error which due to the pre-requirement for .net framework 2.0 as part of the installation. It will fail automatically as windows 7 doesn’t support with .net framework 2.0 anymore. As there are number of solution posted on the internet, but is not easy to resolve this issue. Most easiest way is to get an XP machines install with the xencenter and manage the Xenserver and VMs from there. It just weird that the support on windows 7 is not available up to date, Citrix need to react faster as Windows 7 adoption is big wave going on to many enterprise and newly purchase desktop and laptop.

VMware High Availability Behavior

Posted on March 6th, 2011 in Tips, Virtualization, vSphere | No Comments »

This post is to shared 1 of the incident happened to the previous deployment. There were 2 types of Network adapters running on the physical host, which are NetXen and Broadcom in this case. For the Broadcom adapter, it come with TOE, therefore we had configured the VMkernal on the adapters to handle the IP base datastore for the ESX host.

There was a case that the ESX host become isolated and unresponsive due to the Netxen Driver failure, which we will still able to type command from the server console. While this happen, as the isolation respond option was set to leave power on, the VMware HA will not kick in to force the virtual machine for the fail over process.

There are pros and cons while doing these, but according to my Local VMware friend, the system recognize the lock session on the specified virtual machines were detected in the datastore, therefore the HA clustering will not allow the surviving systems to take over the session. The explanation fall exactly the same with our incident as the VMkernel traffic was still alive during the host network outage happen on the Netxen NICs.

PSOD on HP Proliant G7 with AMD 6100 Series

Posted on March 1st, 2011 in Server, Tips, Virtualization, vSphere | 2 Comments »

There is known issues been faced by small group of user who had deployed their VMware ESX host on the latest platform with G7. You can refer to the official link from HP here and additional KB from VMWare referring to the same issues. If you are facing this, you may be the unlucky 1, but nothing much you could do as the PSOD message will refer to the CPU error, compatible issues and etc.

The only thing you could do is to wait until both HP and VMware to come out a final fix in this case. Quick solution, is change hardware vendor or different platform. I had experienced 3 times about it, in the past 2 months and this is the latest finding we had received from both VMware and HP regards the latest PSOD we had. HP had recommended to upgrade the BIOS, Firmware and driver for multiple times, but this doesn’t fix the issue we are facing. Lately there had release another new update bios and hope this problem will be gone after this.

Feel free to share any work around solution beside the official link provided by tech support.
