Within a week, there are 2 major accquires been done by VMware. By accquire RTO is not surprise to most of us as VMware trying to move forward with the complete cloud solution provider. But this morning, I got the sms from my buddy in VMware inform me about the accquire for Ionix and I am surprised.  After I read through the news this morning, here is the finidng. VMware did not 100% purchase Ionix from it parents company but some of it. Well, to me VMware and Ionix are both owned by EMC. Will there be any different whether is owned by VMware or EMC on this? We will have to keep an eye on that.

Unified Computing System with Unified Storage

Posted on January 30th, 2010 in Data Center, Server, Storage | 1 Comment »

Unified had become a key word today, and what does it really meant for everyone? It is similar as the phenomenal Cloud Computing 2 years ago.  We had seen the storage vendor are moving from FC SAN, ISCSI SAN, NAS to a unified storage today. What a unified storage does today are providing all the storage protocol standard in the market in a single box. Vendor such as EMC and Netapp had their Unified storage to support this today and proven to be performing and user are happy with it.

Beside unified storage, we are looking forward for unified computing system for the server compute platform too. Cisco had moved ahead of their competitor to bring this to the world and it is 1 fo the great platform that get attraction and adoption worldwide. Cisco UCS or Nexus 5000 both provide the unified I/O capabilities and allow us to transform the data center architecture today. Beside consolidating LAN and SAN into 1 with FCoE, the more interesting capabilities that get attention by us are the switching capacity.

DELL Equallogic VS Fiber Channel SAN

Posted on November 14th, 2008 in Hardware, Industry News, Virtualization | 3 Comments »

Economy Crisis this year has encouraged users to consider the ISCSI SAN Vs FC SAN today. Data Storage growth will never stop unless the business is stop. In order to keep the environment growth, the IT architect will have to provide a cost effective solution in the finance critical timing like now.

Performance wise, we may know that the Equallogic ISCSI might not beat the huge SAN box which easily cost you double as your TCO on ISCSI. I would like to share my finding relevant on the features it bundle with Dell Equallogic. In FC SAN, we are able to achieve performance and functionality, which require always additional license cost and expensive infrastructure to support it. Today, ISCSI provide more flexibility in term of FC due to the common understanding we all have on the IP technology which we deal with it everyday.

In Equallogic ISCSI, you will entitle every features which bundle together with the storages you purchase.

Storage Planning – Virtualization

Posted on September 10th, 2008 in Data Center, Storage, Virtualization | 1 Comment »

Storage is always the important piece to be run in Data center as well as any solutions we put into the production environment. It will also impact the capacity planning, performance as well as the sustainable period of the specify solution.

Here I would like to specify talk about ESX storage planning. As many of the cases I read and experience before, more and more users are really heading to the stage of choosing specify storage for specify solutions. Example you may think off for using Netapps on NFS for ESX, which claim better performance, dedupe and protocol different. Somehow, the users had forgotten that they had not run any of netapps storage in their existing environment. When we look at the management perspective, the operation management for IT support is not SIMPLIFY. Everyone know how important to standardize our environment as well as simplify out IT environment. The more complex you have, the more pain you will feel.
