Previously Oracle had decline to provide the official support if you virtualizing your database instance into the VMware virtual infrastructure. Today, there is an official announcement from VMware which confirm the official support from oracle will be provided even you virtualize your database server into VMware.

This is a good news for most of the ERP users especially when you have SAP running in your production environment.

(see SAP Note 1173954 for details):
1. Since Jan 13, 2009, Oracle supports SAP production landscapes on Oracle DB single instance (no RAC) virtualized with VMware ESX 3.5 and higher
2.	Minimum OS on MSFT is Windows Server 2008; SLES and RHEL are also supported
3.	Minimum Oracle release is Oracle 10.2.0.4
4.	Oracle will support VMware in the context of Oracle Metalink Note 249212.1

Read the full details from the official announcement.

I went through this article from Information Week and I absolutely agreed with the point been brought up by the author about the reason why Hyper-V is just not ready for Enterprise use. No question about Microsoft capabilities about the software they had developed. In fact, I had been with Microsoft platform for long year. But when come to virtual data center, I really believe CHEAP do not meant everything and they have a huge gap to close up the competition with VMware anyway.

You can read more from the original post here, have fun.

I was just came back from Sime Darby Convention Centre – HP ProLiant G6 Servers Launch event and VMware competitor “Citrix” and “Microsoft” representative talked about Microsoft Hyper-V and Citrix Xen hypervisor. Anything interesting? Seriously, both of them talked about marketing bull shit! If I’m have not try VMware, Hyper-V or Xen before, probably I may interested with the presentation.

If you’re looking at technical point of view, personally I think VMware competitor is few year behind VMware vSphere. Check out more detail about VMware vSphere 4 Cheat Sheet posted by Jason Boche.

Referring to costing, I don’t agreed with what Citrix presented during the event this morning. You’re always try to tell customer pay if you need it. What are you talking about? Are you trying to tell Enterprise customers don’t use HA or don’t use those features provided? How about Microsoft Hyper-V cost comparison?

Again, I would said I’m not sure how true chart show as above and the most important is apple to apple comparison.

In fact, there are many many kind of comparison between VMware, Microsoft Hyper-V and Citrix Xen. Please feel free to contact us, we’re willing to share with you!

As 6 cores and 8 cores per cpu is going to be launched in the market, there had been some discussion going on about the licensing model current apply to the VMware licensing policies. As current agreement, it will maximum allow 4 cores per CPU sockets. Down the road, it will be 6 cores and 8 cores per CPU. They might be a chances of VMware to change their CPU licensing model in the future, or they may stick with the current policy which base on the physical CPU sockets. VMware is the best products at the current Virtualization market, but they do need to understand that the TCO for a users to start the Virtual Infrastructure Enterprise is more or double the price of the potential customer to switch for Xen, Citrix or Hyper-V. Personally,

I do hope the Licensing Module will be remain and VMware may need to consider to reduce the licensing or provide additional software or services to be bundle together. Let’s keep an eye on this and soon will have some announcement on this by VMware.

Latest news from microsoft had announced to revise the licensing program for virtual machines which run the Windows servers. 1 of the critical comment do upset a lot of the potential customer to further increase the volume of the windows server in thier environment.

Microsoft said they will support the windows machine which run on virtual server, but they refuse to support the VM which run on VMware. As consumer point of view, that will really as a show stopper to a lot of the potential customer to host thier production environment with more windows server in the future.

Compare Microsoft with Novell SUSE Linux, Novell really do a great job providing full support to the customer who have subscript for support every year, and they will support any virtualization platform that you will host your SUSE Linux.

As Linux as strong growth from time to time, this announcement from Microsoft will not drive up the market percentage they have on the virtualization as well as servers products. It will just create another concern to all the users when they do want to implement a new project, and Microsoft will not be the 1st choice mostly.
