VMware Site Recovery Manager Compatible List

Recently there is an interesting question been raised by my customer, Do VMware Site recovery manager supported on VMware Essential plus edition? Obviously as they do not have many servers in place, they would like to seek for alternative solution to drive the cost down, therefore the question had been raised.

The Local VMware Representative had sent me the official link which has the complete compatible list for VMware SRM. It had clearly stated Essential Plus is not supported in this case. If you are doing VMware Design that require SRM in place, I will advice you to read through this complete documentation, it is very useful.

Simplify DR replication in Virtual VS Physical

I had gone through numbers of interesting discussions with the users I met in the past which talk about the disaster recovery plan in their current and future environment. DR is not a new topic for every enterprise environment, but it is always important for the enterprise environment to have DR in place due to business critical and compliance purposes.  While virtualization continue penetrate into enterprise environment by taking mission critical workload, Disaster Recovery solution become a must to be consider which may require users to redesign their DR solution.

Traditional legacy or standalone environment, we often realize there are many solutions perform replication from primary data center to DR center via host base, storage base or image base replication. All of them has the pros & cons depend what is the objective of the specified DR project users are looking at. DR consistency and usability during DR scenario & practices always the biggest challenge in every IT department today.

Site Recovery Manager are not supported with vCloud Director

While vCloud director is the hot topic now for private cloud computing solution from VMware, some of us may overlook into certain requirements that may require Site Recovery Manager for DR solution. If you run in to this situation, the current version of vCloud director may not be the option for you. SRM are officially not supported with vCloud director, which been informed during the official training class and the official reference document you can read from here. You may want to wait for the update release in the future if you plan to have SRM in your private Cloud environment with vCloud director.

Recently there are some request from my client who suggested to have their production and DR site to be automated protected and fail over in the event of disaster. VMware SRM seems to be right choice for most of the time, but these clients are decided to bring it to another level of fail over procedure during the DR happen. I am doing some research today and found this interesting topic from Netapp which the Metro cluster suppose to synchronize from production to DR through dark fiber to prevent controller failure, DR or disk corruption.

SRM 4 is ready for VMware vSphere 4

SRM version 4 had officially released and ready to download from VMware Official Website. Before this, users with SRM will not able to upgrade to vSphere 4 due to the SRM compatible.
