If you are trying to install the Xencenter on Windows 7, you may face an error which due to the pre-requirement for .net framework 2.0 as part of the installation. It will fail automatically as windows 7 doesn’t support with .net framework 2.0 anymore. As there are number of solution posted on the internet, but is not easy to resolve this issue. Most easiest way is to get an XP machines install with the xencenter and manage the Xenserver and VMs from there. It just weird that the support on windows 7 is not available up to date, Citrix need to react faster as Windows 7 adoption is big wave going on to many enterprise and newly purchase desktop and laptop.

As I am setting up the demo for our event tomorrow, I had actually install 1 of the Cisco UCS blade to run with Windows 7 64 bits. The Windows 7 contains 2 x Intel Xeon R5540 with 48 GB memory. Before we could install the machine with USB key, we need to connect the console cable that come with Cisco UCS package which allow VGA, console and USB ports to be connected to any of the UCS blade.

Microsoft had included the virtual PC with backward compatible of Windows XP to support the users who may had difficult to run their application on Windows 7. This is free and we can see more user will sure include this as part of the Windows 7 installation move forward. Bear in mind, if you have VMware Workstation running on the same machine, you may see the conflict happen if you have your Virtual PC application running and you try to start up a virtual machine from VMware Workstation. There will be a message prompt to inform you that there are existing hypervisor utilize the virtualization capabilities on your machine. The only way to get your VM start up is to end the session of your Virtual PC application. You should able to start your virtual machine up. Not very sure whether there are any workaround beside this, but at this moment, it consider a conflict and we need to choose either 1 to be run at a time.
Many of you may had experienced that the new vSphere vCenter client may not work properly on Microsoft Windows 7. To overcome this, some of you may require to install the vSphere client on a virtual machine which run on Windows XP. Since myself is the beta tester of Windows 7, I had recently install the free edition of virtual pc for XP compatible on my laptop and I had the vSphere client install on it. To launch the vSphere vCenter client, I only need to launch the virtual application which do not require myself to power on the VM and remote log in to it. The process will as simple as single click to launch the application from my Windows 7 laptop. Now I got the vSphere vCenter client running on my Microsoft Windows 7 without any problem.
Previously I had my windows 7 running on ESX 3.5, Workstation and VMware Server 2.0, and now I have my windows 7 on VMware vSphere, the next generation of ESX server from VMware. Notice that the operating system option will not provide windows 7 for your selection, which I believe VMware will include this on the final release of vSphere when windows 7 become officially launch to public. Anyway, you can still install it on your ESX or vSphere by choosing Windows Vista as an option.
